Similar Bones
Can be confused with thoracic vertebrae from the upper back. Neck bones can generally be distinguished by their wider transverse profile and the presence of smaller side channels or openings for blood vessels, which are absent in standard back bones.
Across Species
Neck bones vary dramatically across the animal kingdom. While giraffes and humans share the exact same count of seven neck bones, the giraffe's are immensely elongated. Marine mammals often have compressed or fused neck bones to streamline their bodies for powerful swimming, whereas birds have highly flexible necks with many more segments to allow for sweeping head movements.
Evolutionary History
The backbone is an ancient blueprint shared by all vertebrates, evolving from the flexible notochord of early aquatic ancestors. As tetrapods moved onto land, the vertebral column evolved specialized segments to support the body weight against gravity and allow for head rotation.
