Key Features

Look for a small, rounded, cup-like shape at the upper end designed for pivoting, a gentle curving shaft down the middle, and a slightly enlarged, knobby lower end that connects to the wrist area.

Similar Bones

Can be easily confused with the ulna, its companion bone in the forearm. The ulna is usually larger at the elbow end with a distinct hook-like grip, whereas the radius has a neat, circular, button-like top end.

Across Species

In humans and many primates, the radius is designed to cross over the neighboring ulna, allowing the hand to twist and rotate. In running mammals like horses and deer, this twisting ability is lost, and the radius is fused or tightly bound to the ulna for extra stability during high-speed locomotion.

Evolutionary History

Tracing back to the earliest land-dwelling tetrapods, the radius has long served as one of the twin support pillars of the lower front limb, evolving from ancestral fin structures that first hoisted vertebrates out of ancient waters onto dry land.
