Dimensions

Sizes vary wildly depending on the animal, ranging from tiny bead-like shapes in small rodents to massive, heavy blocks in large whales and elephants. They feature a central spool-shaped body with radiating bony arms.

Key Features

Look for a central ring or tube of bone with a solid, rounded base at the bottom. A long, blade-like spine points upward from the top, and two flat wing-like projections stick out from the sides, creating a striking T-shape or cross shape when viewed head-on.

Similar Bones

Beginners might occasionally confuse individual backbone segments with small skull fragments or pelvic pieces. However, the presence of a hollow central hole for the spinal cord, combined with the distinct symmetrical side wings and single top spine, makes a backbone instantly recognizable.

Backbones show incredible variety across the animal kingdom. In fish, they are simple hourglass shapes that allow side-to-side swimming wiggles.
