Dimensions
Dimensions vary wildly depending on the animal, ranging from a few centimeters in small mammals to massive, heavy blocks in large grazing animals or aquatic giants. They generally feature a central block-like body with various wing-like projections extending outward.
Key Features
Look for a thick, spool-shaped central body with a broad, flat top surface designed for cushioning disks. Prominent wing-like projections stretch out to the sides, and a sturdy bony arch rises from the back to form a protective tunnel for the spinal cord.
Similar Bones
These can be confused with chest or lower back vertebrae. Neck bones are generally distinguished by extra openings or tunnels through their side projections for blood vessels, a feature rarely found in other regions of the spine.
Across Species
In giraffes, these neck bones are immensely elongated to reach high foliage, yet they maintain the exact same seven-bone count found in most mammals, including humans. In whales, these same bones are often compressed and fused together to streamline the body and reduce drag in the water, as neck flexibility is unnecessary for swimming.
Evolutionary History
Vertebrae are among the most ancient skeletal structures, evolving alongside early fish to protect the spinal cord and provide sturdy anchor points for swimming muscles.
