Look for a long, straight shaft with a wider, blocky upper end and a slightly expanded lower end. The front edge often features a sharp, distinct ridge running down the upper half.
Similar Bones
Can be easily confused with the neighboring fibula or the upper arm bone (humerus). The shinbone is typically much thicker, straighter, and features a prominent triangular cross-section along its middle shaft compared to the more rounded arm bone.
Across Species
In humans, the shinbone is sturdy and sits alongside a thinner companion bone. In running mammals like horses and deer, the shinbone is elongated and heavily fused with neighboring elements for speed and stability. In birds, it fuses with ankle bones to form a single sturdy leg pillar.
