Key Features
Look for a thick, heavy shaft that tapers slightly, topped by a distinctive, deeply grooved rolling joint surface divided into rounded lobes. The opposite end typically opens into a flatter, squared-off surface where it connects to the lower foot joints.
Similar Bones
Can be easily confused with the main upper arm or thigh bones due to their heavy build, but distinguished by the pulley-like grooves at the joint end rather than a smooth ball or hinge socket.
Across Species
In even-toed ungulates like cows and deer, the main lower foot bones fuse together into a single sturdy pillar to handle the immense weight of running and grazing. In horses, this trend is taken to the extreme, with a single massive central bone supporting their entire weight on a single hoof.
