Innominate
Irregular bone, part of the appendicular skeleton
Also known as: Hip bone, pelvis fragment

Classification
Irregular bone, part of the appendicular skeleton
Dimensions
Sizes vary wildly across species, ranging from a few inches in small mammals to over a foot in large ungulates. It features a broad, flattened blade-like section flaring out into distinct wing shapes alongside sturdy structural pillars.
Key Features
Look for a sprawling, wing-like flattened plate that curves smoothly, transitioning into a thick, sturdy pillar surrounding a deep cup-shaped socket. The surface often displays interesting textural variations between smooth dense outer layers and porous inner honeycomb structures exposed along broken edges.
Similar Bones
Can be mistaken for shoulder blades due to the flat, fan-like blade shape. However, unlike shoulder blades, this hip bone features a distinct deep socket (where the thigh bone connects) and much thicker, more rigid structural pillars.
Across Species
In four-legged running animals like horses and deer, this bone is elongated to provide massive leverage for sprinting muscles. In birds, it is heavily fused with the spine to create a rigid frame capable of absorbing the heavy landing forces of flight. In marine mammals like whales, the hind limb girdle has shrunk away to tiny, floating remnants as swimming took over.
Evolutionary History
This bone evolved from the pelvic girdle of ancient lobe-finned fish, which originally served to anchor the pelvic fins. With the transition of vertebrates onto land, it underwent a dramatic transformation to connect the hind limbs directly to the spine, shifting from a simple stabilizing strut into a powerful load-bearing arch that transfers all locomotion forces from the legs to the main body trunk.
Photography Tips
Place the bone on a solid, neutral-colored background to make its outline pop. Take your main shot looking straight down at the flat face of the bone under soft, angled natural light to highlight the surface texture and contours, and include a common object like a coin or ruler for scale reference.
