Dimensions

Sizes vary wildly from tiny, bead-like segments in small rodents to massive, heavy blocks in large whales and land mammals, generally featuring a central blocky spool connected to a prominent backward-pointing fin of bone.

Key Features

Look for a solid, roughly cylindrical main body with a large central hole through which the spinal cord passes. A prominent, blade-like spine points backward from the top, and various small interlocking knobs stick out from the sides and ends to connect neighboring segments like a puzzle.

Similar Bones

Beginners might occasionally mistake individual vertebrae for small fragments of pelvis or skull pieces due to their complex, bumpy shapes. However, the presence of the large hollow tunnel for the nerve cord and the distinct flat matching surfaces on the front and back of the main body are dead giveaways for a vertebra.

Across Species

Vertebrae show incredible versatility across the animal kingdom. In fish, they are relatively simple hour-glass shapes designed for side-to-side tail swishing. In birds, neck vertebrae are saddle-shaped to allow extreme head-turning flexibility while in-flight. In mammals, they often feature tall backward-pointing spines that anchor powerful back and neck muscles for running or browsing.

Evolutionary History

The backbone is one of the defining hallmarks of vertebrates, originating over 500 million years ago in early aquatic ancestors. Originally evolving as a flexible rod of cartilage called a notochord, it gradually segmented and hardened into bone over millions of years to protect the main nerve cord and provide sturdy anchor points for swimming and walking muscles.

Place the bone on a neutral, solid-colored background with natural side lighting to cast shadows and highlight the intricate bony bumps and ridges. Take one shot looking straight down the central hole, and another from the side to clearly capture the height and angle of the backward-pointing spine.
