Dimensions
These bones vary widely in size depending on the animal and their location in the back. In medium-to-large mammals, the main body is often the size of a large coin or a small puck, featuring several spreading wing-like projections.
Key Features
Look for a thick, solid cylindrical central part with a large hole behind it for the spinal cord. It typically has various 'wings' or 'spines' sticking out to the sides and the top, which act as levers for muscles. The texture often shows a honeycomb-like pattern on the inside when the outer surface is worn away.
Similar Bones
Beginners might confuse a single backbone segment with a piece of the pelvis. However, the pelvis is generally flatter and more blade-like, whereas this bone is characterized by its central circular body and the distinct tunnel that allows the spinal cord to pass through.

In massive whales, the central bodies become enormous drum-like cylinders to support immense weight in water.
