Key Features

Look for a slender cylindrical shaft with rounded, knob-like articular surfaces on both ends. One end usually features a distinct smooth ball shape that fits into the hip socket, while the opposite end flares out into two smooth ridges that form the knee joint.

Similar Bones

Can be confused with the upper arm bone (humerus) or lower leg bones (tibia or radius). The thigh bone is distinguished by its classic rounded joint ball on one end and symmetrical flared hinges at the opposite end, whereas upper arm bones often have flattened ridges near the top shaft.

Across Species

In birds, the thigh bone is surprisingly short and stout compared to the lower leg bones, remaining tucked close to the body inside the feather line. In contrast, running mammals like deer have long, powerful thigh bones built for long strides.
