Look for a symmetrical pair of broad, flared upper wings joined at a central base, featuring two large characteristic holes (the obturator foramina) and a deep socket on each outer side where the leg bone connects.

Similar Bones

Can be confused with large shoulder blades (scapulae) or flat skull bones. However, the pelvis is instantly distinguished by its three-dimensional ring shape, the presence of large symmetrical window-like holes, and deep hip sockets.

In humans, the pelvis forms a sturdy, bowl-shaped structure adapted for upright walking.
