Rib
Flat bone, part of the axial skeleton
Also known as: Rib bone, ribcage bone, spare rib

Classification
Flat bone, part of the axial skeleton
Dimensions
Long, slender, and gracefully curved bones that vary dramatically in length depending on their position along the chest and the overall size of the animal.
Key Features
Look for a long, gently twisted, ribbon-like curve with a smooth outer surface and a slightly grooved inner edge. One end usually features a rounded or flattened knob where it connects near the spine, while the other tapers smoothly toward what would be the front chest area.
Similar Bones
Beginners might occasionally confuse ribs with small limb bone shafts or clavicles. However, unlike straight limb shafts, ribs possess a distinct, sweeping, three-dimensional twist and a curved profile. They are also much flatter and narrower than major leg bones.
Across Species
Ribs show incredible diversity across the animal kingdom. In snakes, ribs line nearly the entire length of the body, acting as walking legs that grip the ground through specialized scales. In birds, many ribs feature small bony hooks called uncinate processes that overlap neighboring ribs to create a rigid, sturdy basket capable of handling the immense stresses of wing flapping. In aquatic mammals like whales and dolphins, the ribs are robust and heavy to help with buoyancy control and to protect vital swimming machinery.
Evolutionary History
Ribs are ancient structures that date back to early aquatic vertebrates. Long before animals walked on land, primitive fish possessed simple bony rods branching out from the spine to anchor swimming muscles and protect soft organs. When vertebrates transitioned to terrestrial life, these ribs expanded and locked together to form a sturdy protective cage, preventing gravity from crushing the heart and lungs.
Photography Tips
Lay the bone flat against a solid, contrasting background with indirect natural lighting to highlight the gentle curves and texture. Include a common coin or ruler next to the bone to provide an instant sense of scale.
