Across Species

Vertebrae show incredible adaptability across the animal kingdom. In fish, they are relatively simple hourglass shapes designed for side-to-side bending. In birds, neck vertebrae are exceptionally nimble with saddle-shaped joints allowing a wide range of head movement. In whales, the tail segments are flattened to anchor powerful swimming muscles, while giraffes feature remarkably elongated neck segments containing the same basic number of pieces as most other mammals.

Evolutionary History

The backbone is one of the defining hallmarks of the vertebrate lineage, emerging over 500 million years ago. Early ancestors possessed a flexible rod called a notochord, which was gradually replaced through evolution by segmented bony rings that protect the delicate nerve cord while still allowing fluid, powerful movement.
