One end features a knob-like joint area where it connects to the spine, while the main body forms a smooth curve with a shallow groove running along the inner bottom edge where blood vessels and nerves once rested. The opposite end transitions smoothly toward the front of the body.

Ribs are most commonly confused with long bones like the radius, fibula, or slender limb fragments. However, ribs can be distinguished by their distinct side-to-side flattening, consistent curved arch, and the unique dual-headed or knobbed attachment end rather than round ball-and-socket joints.
Across Species
Rib structure varies across the animal kingdom based on locomotion and respiration needs. Birds have specialized hooked projections on their ribs called uncinate processes that overlap to strengthen the chest cage during flight. Ribs evolved early in vertebrate history, originating in ancient fish to protect internal organs and support muscle attachment along the body trunk. Early tetrapods had ribs along nearly the entire length of their spine, from the neck to the tail. Over time, as distinct body regions like the chest and lower back developed, ribs became restricted primarily to the chest region in mammals, allowing greater flexibility in the lower spine for running and leaping.
