Key Features

The most defining feature of a rib is its gentle, sweeping arch shape, resembling a boomerang or a bow. One end typically features a small, rounded head or smooth facets where it attaches to the backbone, while the body tapers slightly into a flatter, smoother edge.

Similar Bones

Beginners might occasionally confuse curved ribs with slender pieces of driftwood, long curved claws, or certain types of curved plant stems. The porous internal texture and smooth outer surface of natural bone easily distinguish it from wood or plant material.

Ribs show wonderful diversity across the animal kingdom. In snakes, ribs run the entire length of the body and connect to broad belly scales to aid in locomotion.
