Similar Bones
Can be easily confused with the neighboring fibula or the upper arm bone (humerus). The tibia is usually much thicker, straighter, and features a prominent ridge along the shaft compared to the slender, needle-like fibula.
Across Species
In running mammals like horses and deer, the tibia is heavily elongated and fused with other elements for speed and stride length. In birds, it fuses with ankle bones to form the tibiotarsus. In marine mammals like whales, the tibia is drastically reduced or absent as limbs transitioned into flukes and flippers.
Evolutionary History
The tibia traces its origins back to the sturdy, weight-bearing limb bones of the first tetrapods that crawled onto land during the Devonian period. Over millions of years, its shape has adapted from a sprawling, side-slung posture support into an upright pillar capable of bearing high impact forces in terrestrial runners.
