Dimensions
Varies widely depending on species, from under an inch long in small mammals to over a foot high in large ungulates. It is characterized by a thick central block and a distinctively long, flattened blade projecting from the back.
Key Features
Look for a central round or oval block of bone with a prominent central opening where the nerve cord runs. Extending backward from this opening is a long, flat, paddle-like or needle-like projection. On the sides, small smooth landing pads exist where ribs attached.
Similar Bones
Can be confused with lumbar vertebrae, which have shorter, broad upper spines and wide side fins, or cervical (neck) vertebrae, which typically feature large side holes for blood vessels and much shorter projections on top.
Across Species
In large grazing mammals like horses, bison, and deer, thoracic vertebrae feature extraordinarily tall, ridge-like crests pointing upward from the spine, forming the structural anchor for muscle and ligament networks that hold up heavy heads. In marine mammals like dolphins, these bones are much flatter and flexible to aid in aquatic undulation, while in birds, many thoracic vertebrae are fused into a rigid rod to provide stability during flight.
Evolutionary History
Vertebrae evolved over 500 million years ago in early aquatic vertebrates, initially as simple cartilage surrounding the spinal cord. As animals transitioned onto land, the vertebral column adapted to resist gravity, evolving interlocking joints and elongated upper spines to support the weight of the head and torso off the ground.
